I'm a writer from North East England, interested in finding moving and boundary-pushing stories in seemingly unremarkable places. Much of my writing is extremely personal and provocative.
I have a particular interest in realism, British, working class settings, female perspectives, sexuality, family life, gender identity, pornography, extremity, entomology and anatomy.
My Manifesto:
At the heart of my writing is a desire to see more problematic female-identifying protagonists. I want to see women who reject the prescribed behaviors of gender and prove that there is more to them than their place within a heteronormative, binary-gendered world.
We need problematic female characters to show that being problematic - being deeply flawed or unorthodox - isn’t an indication of gender at all, because gender is not its cause.
Audiences are infatuated with unpalatable and problematic protagonists like Taxi Driver’s Travis Bickle and A Clockwork Orange's Alex DeLarge, but where are their female counterparts?
Let's see if I can write them myself.
My Influences:
Literature: Franz Kafka, The Marquis de Sade, Georges Bataille, William Burroughs, Anaïs Nin, Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho, Iain Banks' The Wasp Factory, The Bible
Film: Mike Leigh, Céline Sciamma, Catherine Breillat, Andrea Arnold, Gaspar Noé, Lars von Trier, Michael Haneke, Harmony Korine, Park Chan-wook, John Waters, Thomas Vinterberg, Yorgos Lanthimos
